Our clients utilise these natural shells for crafts, and both interior and exterior decoration. With a little furniture polish, the shells develop a burnished, antique pine colour, with a beautiful almost wood-like grain.
Cone shells are generally found in warm shallow waters where between 400 to 500 species have been identified. Many of the shells are much prized for their striped and speckled markings.
The mollusc living within the cone shell is able to immobilise its prey with a harpoon-like tooth which can be extended beyond the length of the shell. The venom can be very painful and has been known to be fatal to humans on rare occasions.
