Usually seen as an easy to grow houseplant, Tradescantia Fluminensis Quadricolor is actually proving to be relatively root hardy in zone 9 gardens when grown in the ground rapidly covering large areas. Ideal for ground cover or trailing over walls, baskets and pots with its green, white, pink and purple fleshy leaves. Frost will usually knock it to the ground but new growth usually shows through by late spring.
White, triangle shape flowers are produced in the summer but it is grown more for the multi coloured foliage. Tolerates any well drained soil with plenty of food and water during the growing season. Very cold winter will kill it off if the roots freeze. Protect young growth in spring from slug damage. Low growing, spreading and trailing with an indefinite spread and usually reaching a maximum height of 20cm.
Sent as a young plant in a 9cm pot. Due to their very fast growth rate we regularly have to cut these back hard. If your plant has only just been cut back do not worry, they are back to normal within a couple of weeks.
