A deep-blue metamorphic rock used as a semi-precious stone that has long been prized for its intense colour. It was heavily used in the funeral mask of Tutankhamun as well as many other ancient artifacts. It was also ground into powder and made into ultramarine, one of the most expensive of all blue pigments used in oil paintings and clothing.
Lazurite is the most important mineral component, a blue feldspathoid silicate mineral with the formula (Na,Ca)8(AlSiO4)6(S,SO4,Cl)1-2. Lapis lazuli usually also contains calcite (white), sodalite (blue), and pyrite but can also contain augite, diopside, enstatite, mica, hauynite, hornblende, nosean, and sulfur-rich löllingite geyerite.
Origin: Afghanistan.
