Deep purple red stems and foliage up to 3ft tall with scarlet flowers make this hardyish plant a good contender for the exotic garden. Often sold as a marginal pond plant but grows much better in humus rich moist soil in full sun. Excessive moisture around the roots during the colder months can be a killer. During hard winters a deep mulch may be needed and protect from slug damage throughout the year.
