Musa accuminata 'Dwarf Cavendish' Edible Banana
MUSA-DW-CAV
Hot Plant Company
This beautiful, true edible fruiting banana was named in honour of the 6th Duke of Devonshire, William Cavendish. The dwarf part of the name refers to the pseaudostem (trunk) which is much shorter than other banana species.
It features large, paddle-shaped, jungly leaves up to 1.5 meters long and an overall height usually around two meters. The fruit (if / when produced) is full banana size and Dwarf Cavendish is a commercially grown species for crop production.
Will you get fruit in the UK?? Possible, but it will need to be grown for up to around 3 years and kept above 10c through the Winter so growth continues during the colder months.
Makes a great patio plant in the UK for the Summer and a good house plant for the Winter!
If the plant has become too tall for overwintering indoors just cut the whole trunk down to the ground and watch growth start all over again as new leaves start to shoot from the centre of the old pseaudostem.
Suckers freely producing pups that quickly grow to give multi stemmed clumps. Humus rich potting compost with lots and lots of water and regular feeding during the growing season. Full sun is a must especially if you are hoping to get some nanas!!
Ultimate height: 2.5-4 metres
Ultimate spread: 1.5-2.5 metres
Sent as a young plant in a 9cm pot. May be cut back for shipping. Sent as dormant plants in winter.
