Probably one of the fastest growing palms that may be suitable for warmer UK gardens reaching up to 5 to 6 metres in 10 years. Said to be hardy down to -9 centigrade when mature but young plants really do need protecting for their first few winters outside. It seems that the cold is not such a problem in our climate but the cold and wet combined is so make sure the soil is exceptionally well drained. Despite it's fast growth rate these do lend themselves well to pot culture as long as you use a big pot. The leaves on mature plants can be up to 2 meters across, fan like, armed with curved, hook like spines and are covered with cotton like thread. Young plants and leaves are not usually armed. Pick a sheltered spot, in full sun and with well drained soil. Maximum height 18 meters.
Sent as a young plant in a 1ltr pot.
