This is a clump-forming, deciduous perennial with lance-shaped, slender, upright mid-green leaves. In early to mid Summer, it produces beautiful bright red flowers on arching stems. Once flowering is over the stems and foliage die back before sending out new growth. If soil temperatures are too high this will halt new growth until the weather cools. Position in areas of full sun either facing South, East or West. Winter foliage may be cut back by heavy frosts. Requires moderately fertile, acidic to alkaline, moist but well-drained soil such as chalk, clay or loam.
