This is a clump-forming, deciduous (semi-evergreen in mild areas) perennial that is native to China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam. It bears compound leaves divided into nine or more, heart-shaped, light green leaflets, flushed bronze when young. In Spring, beautiful sprays of little, lilac, white, yellow or pink, long-spurred flowers appear. Position in partial shade and protect from cold, drying winds. Requires acidic to neutral, fertile, moist but well-drained soil such as clay, loam or sand.
