Pietersite belongs to the large family of quartzand is a highly valued gemstone. It is composed of both tiger's eye and hawk's eye being a pseudomorph of quartz. This means that it started its life as another mineral (crocidolite) but over time the crocidolite fibres have been replaced by quartz.
