Heliotropium arborescens is a delightful shrub from Peru growing up to 1.2 meters tall. It is quite short lived by shrub standards forming a bushy, semi-evergreen broad plant with evergreen leaves and dense clusters of heavily, vanilla scented blooms through the summer. The flowers of Midnight Sky are a deep purple, nectar rich and loved by butterflies and bees. Regular deadheading will improve flowering through the season.
Usually grown as an annual as they are not frost hardy but cuttings can easily be taken in late summer and overwintered in a bright, frost free spot for winter. More mature plants can be cut back, potted and overwintered with a minimum temperature of 10c. All parts are harmful if ingested so keep away from pets, livestock and young children. Tolerates most soils as long as they are moist, but well drained and best flowering is produced in full sun although it will tolerate part shade. Feed once every 3 to 4 weeks during the growing season using a balanced liquid fertiliser.
Sent as a young plant in a 9cm pot.
