This is a clump-forming, deciduous perennial with toothed, thin, lance-shaped leaves. In Summer and Autumn, it bears racemes of two-lipped, tube-shaped, mauve flowers. Position in areas of either full sun or partial shade. May need to be staked and has a tendency to droop in very fertile soil. Requires acidic to alkaline, moderately fertile, moist but well-drained or moisture-retentive soil such as; chalk, clay, loam or sand.
