Also known as Brazilian butterfly this dainty little tropical produces deep purple foliage from late spring through to the first frosts of autumn and has pale pink to white starry flowers from summer onwards. It is a deciduous, bulbous plant that is said to be tender but we have found it to be reliably hardy if given a moist but well drained soil and a thick winter mulch of bark chippings. Unfortunately they only seem to be able to survive the winter in the ground, we have had no luck overwintering outside in pots except during mild winters.
Ideal for the front of a part shaded border but does seem to be able to tolerate full sun if the soil is kept evenly moist. If kept frost free they can remain evergreen but we have found that they do benefit from a winter rest period producing better plants the following year. Maximum height is usually about 20 to 25cm with a 50cm spread.
Sent as a young plant in a 9cm pot. Sent as dormant plants in winter. May be cut back for shipping.
